Just the right amount of flavor, all throughout.

Topped, but not dominated by, blue cheese and crispy bacon, you will be well on your way to a fulfilling food-coma stupor. But it’ll be a heavenly one.

Using good ground meat is key. We like to use a leaner meat (85/15), and grass fed/organic, when possible. It really makes all the difference.

Also, don’t flip those burgs to and fro. Just once will do. You don’t want to ruin the beautiful grill lines, or be held responsible for a dry burger via escaping juices.

The blue cheese might not melt completely on the grill, but don’t worry, the toasted bun will help the process.

Rob and I had some burger building and photo wars. He’s pretty talented with the camera, but come on, there’s no way he’d beat me in making a burger look pretty.

P.S. I’m glad my new camera strap made it into the pic. I love the leather and polka dots Smile.

I kept it simple and stuck with BBQ sauce..ok and yellow mustard too… I’m a mustard junkie.

We can attest to the fact that they were both equally delicious. Winners all around.

While we were enjoying the stay-cation in a rad house in San Diego, overlooking Sunset Cliffs, we had many grill-outs, enjoyed good wine with good friends (look, Gio has 3 glasses himself!), enjoyed beautiful fireworks, and we ruled out ever getting Scottish Terriers. Ever.

I believe that you can only do so much relaxing. So to spruce things up a bit, we jumped off some cliffs. No big deal.

It’s not that far down, so you can relax now. And it was plenty deep, Scout’s honor.

The food was even on vacation. Just hanging out, overlooking the ocean, and living the dream, really…until it was time to eat.

Bacon & Blue Cheese Burgers

Print Recipe!

Makes 4 burgers


1 to 1.25 lbs. lean ground beef

8 dashes Worcestershire

3/4 tsp. garlic salt (or salt, plus 1 large clove minced garlic)

1 egg

3 Tbsp. breadcrumbs or panko crumbs

1/2 tsp. black pepper

1/4 cup onions, minced

1/4 tsp. smoked paprika

1 Tbsp. parsley, chopped (or use  1 1/2 tsp dried)


4 slices bacon, cooked and halved

4 oz. blue cheese, or more to taste

4 buns (we used honey whole wheat)

Condiments (BBQ sauce, Ranch, mustard, ketchup…)



Cook bacon until crispy, and set aside on a paper towel.

Combine ground beef, Worcestershire, garlic salt, egg, breadcrumbs, black pepper, onions, smoked paprika, parsley and mix well, but don’t over-handle the meat.

Form into 4 large patties (or 5 smaller patties or you can make about 10-12 sliders). Press a divot in the center of each patty and cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to grill.

Over high heat, grill for about 4-5 minutes then flip. Finish grilling until desired done-ness (another 3-5 minutes) sprinkling the blue cheese and topping with bacon in the last couple minutes of cooking. Immediately remove from grill and serve with toasted buns and your favorite toppings.

Note: the yummy asparagus was seasoned with garlic salt, pepper, olive oil and grilled until tender-crisp (about 8 minutes), turning occasionally.

  1. Perfect timing – we just got a brand new sparkling BBQ and are having a burger bar this weekend. Blue cheese and bacon will be on the menu! What an awesome cliff jumping spot – gorgeous!
