About Us

We are two mid-twenty gals who are best buds with a common love of cooking. We currently reside at the beach in San Diego. Our blog is inspired by the very small and very yellow kitchen where we grew our passion for all things food!

 Here in the LYK you will find everything from healthy spins on everyday meals to the most sinful of desserts. Our goal is to give readers simple recipes that will satisfy any palate, impress any guest, and of course leave you wanting more.

We believe a tasty meal doesn’t require a large budget, can be done in a timely manner, and is much easier to accomplish than most people think.

In the LYK we recreate basic recipes, altering and mixing ingredients to satisfy our passion for adding a little zest to everything we do. We hope the LYK can encourage you to live deliciously, through simple homemade meals, and to always find room for dessert!

We believe in the great value of sharing meals with family and friends and we want to encourage and inspire our readers to take this one step further — before gathering around the dinner table, meet in the kitchen to prepare, create, learn, and have fun.

Whether it be through serving homemade soup and fresh baked rolls to the local homeless every Thursday, preparing meals for church volunteers, or sharing treats with neighbors, we love to give back to our community and we hope we can inspire others to do the same.

Little Yellow Note: We love hearing from our readers! Please leave us some love. We enjoy hearing about any additions, subtractions or changes you may make to our recipes. After all, we believe everyone should always add a little zest of their own!

  22. It would be fun to know what other April Fools concoctions are out there. Pineapple upside down cake was suggested. But too labor intensive for me at the moment. I did find a recipe for a meat loaf rat – yes, RAT. It was made with ground beef, but think that might be a little over the top, even for April Fools.

    We were forwarded an email to Helen Perry of St. Andrews by the Sea on Friday. We are the couple (actually Bunny is the chef) who serve the homeless north of the pier every Thursday at 6PM at the end of Diamond Street. Bunny makes the best (according to the recipients) homemade chicken soup in the world. We would welcome your enthusiasm and love for cooking to be part of the the Thursday meal. Rolls and bread are a good starter to add on to the menu. We will have four large pots of homemade chicken soup for the soul hot and ready for serving. Please contacts us for more info on how you can spread God’s ministry to the needy in PB. Contact is by email and we will send you our home # so we can plan ahead.

    It’s Matt from the infamous pajama party! (I also stuffed my face at the Charger game) First off, thank you for all of the cooking that you did. All the food was super delish!! My favorite was that pear-pizza unit. YUM!!!

  39. Any substitutions for the 3 Tbsp. of coconut oil in the choc. chip, coconut, oatmeal cookies allowed?
    Maybe 3 Tbsp. regular oil?
    Or am I doomed to wait until I drive into town?

    Of course you can use 3 Tbsp of butter or canola oil. I would go with adding more room temp butter. You will be sacrificing the main coconut flavor component, but the shredded coconut will still add some flavor, it will just be subtle. If you happen to have coconut extract lying around (it’s a longs shot), then go ahead an add 1 tsp along with the substituted butter.

    When you get a chance to stock up on glorious coconut oil, you will just have to make them again and taste the difference! Enjoy!
