About Us

We are two mid-twenty gals who are best buds with a common love of cooking. We currently reside at the beach in San Diego. Our blog is inspired by the very small and very yellow kitchen where we grew our passion for all things food!

Here in the LYK you will find everything from healthy spins on everyday meals to the most sinful of desserts. Our goal is to give readers simple recipes that will satisfy any palate, impress any guest, and of course leave you wanting more.

We believe a tasty meal doesn’t require a large budget, can be done in a timely manner, and is much easier to accomplish than most people think.

In the LYK we recreate basic recipes, altering and mixing ingredients to satisfy our passion for adding a little zest to everything we do. We hope the LYK can encourage you to live deliciously, through simple homemade meals, and to always find room for dessert!

We believe in the great value of sharing meals with family and friends and we want to encourage and inspire our readers to take this one step further — before gathering around the dinner table, meet in the kitchen to prepare, create, learn, and have fun.

Whether it be through serving homemade soup and fresh baked rolls to the local homeless every Thursday, preparing meals for church volunteers, or sharing treats with neighbors, we love to give back to our community and we hope we can inspire others to do the same.

Little Yellow Note: We love hearing from our readers! Please leave us some love. We enjoy hearing about any additions, subtractions or changes you may make to our recipes. After all, we believe everyone should always add a little zest of their own!

  1. I love what you are doing. Go girls. I was afraid that cooking was fast becoming a lost art to to next generation.

  2. Nice job but “Where’s the Beef!”

  3. Hi girls! This is a very pretty blog (I love the wordpress theme… :P). I totally agree with your philosophy and I’m curious to follow your creations! (Of course, I’ve just subscribed… :))

  12. Hi…

    You Diva Delicious Culinary Vixens,

I read your recipes [even sent you gal’s an email] . You really know how to make a person salivate. The “zest” practically jumps off the page onto your palate. Have you considered a retaurant or qaint little bistro on the beach, somewhere? Anywhere? Your talent and passion for food is your “pearl in that oyster”. :)

    Warm regards,

    P. S. Drop in an visit with me @ http://www.cherubfurberre.wordpress.com. It would be my pleasure. Also, since you are so “zesty”…Click on SassC’s Salacious and Sultry Totty….brew it up and tell me what you think. If you aren’t drinkers…you might delete the Southern Comfort and kick up the pungency of the ginger root and lemons. :)

  13. Am subscribing eight now. Am in southern Spain, but always looking for inspiration from around the world. I am still best buddies with my friend from school days 35 years on. And we too had a “Little Yellow Kitchen” of our own, so this brings back happy memories. Keep cooking chicas! Tanya (chicaandaluza)

  14. Awww! That is so sweet! It’s amazing how cooking brings people together. I am sure this is the start of something great. Thanks for taking the time to write us :) we look forward to sharing more recipes and stories with you!

  15. Thanks SassC’! We will stop by sometime :)

  16. Like’n what the green hair does for the two of you.

  17. you two are so adorable!! and i LOVE BOTH of your guys’ hair color.
    apart from the green 😉

  18. I love ur blog! I found it from tasty kitchen and I think it is great! Can’t wait to read more!

  19. Lauren

Aw thanks!! So glad you like it!

  20. Got an an April Fool’s day young adult Bible study coming up tomrrow. We’re all supposed to bring “trickstery treats.” Your dirt cups (with peanut butter!) look easy-fast-delcious-perfect. Thanks.

  21. Chrissy

Those will be so much fun at your Bible study!

  22. It would be fun to know what other April Fools concoctions are out there. Pineapple upside down cake was suggested. But too labor intensive for me at the moment. I did find a recipe for a meat loaf rat – yes, RAT. It was made with ground beef, but think that might be a little over the top, even for April Fools.

  23. Lauren

Great idea!! That is the perfect recipe for April Fool’s Day. Let us know how it goes over :)

  24. Hi Crissy,

We were forwarded an email to Helen Perry of St. Andrews by the Sea on Friday. We are the couple (actually Bunny is the chef) who serve the homeless north of the pier every Thursday at 6PM at the end of Diamond Street. Bunny makes the best (according to the recipients) homemade chicken soup in the world. We would welcome your enthusiasm and love for cooking to be part of the the Thursday meal. Rolls and bread are a good starter to add on to the menu. We will have four large pots of homemade chicken soup for the soul hot and ready for serving. Please contacts us for more info on how you can spread God’s ministry to the needy in PB. Contact is by email and we will send you our home # so we can plan ahead.

  26. You two are just too cute! :)

  27. That’s cool! I’m from San Diego as well, although I’m going to cal poly slo, so I’m not there right now, haha. Anyways it’s nice to have a blogger from San Diego instead of the East Coast, not that they aren’t great either!

  28. Ladies
I’m having fun following your travels Lauren. This is the first time I’ve checked out the whole site and I love it. Keep up the great work!

  36. Chrissy and Lauren,

It’s Matt from the infamous pajama party! (I also stuffed my face at the Charger game) First off, thank you for all of the cooking that you did. All the food was super delish!! My favorite was that pear-pizza unit. YUM!!!

Anyway I enjoyed meeting you both and thought I would stop by and say hello! Such a neat thing you have going here. I am officially impressed! :) Let me know if you are in need of a food taster…I’m a professional eater…..Haha!! have a merry xmas and hope to run into you again soon!!

  37. Chrissy

    Hey Matt!

Great to hear from you and we are so happy that you enjoyed all of our hard work! Sandy, Pearl, Lauren and I had the best time cooking up a feast for our PJ Party attendees! We always welcome professional eaters, so let us know when you are in the hood.
Have a great Christmas and New Year!
    Stop by soon,

  38. Such an adorable blog! My best friend and I have one too. It’s so much fun to work on together, even though we don’t get to share a kitchen like y’all. Subscribing now, so glad I found you!

  39. Any substitutions for the 3 Tbsp. of coconut oil in the choc. chip, coconut, oatmeal cookies allowed?
    Maybe 3 Tbsp. regular oil?
Or am I doomed to wait until I drive into town?

  40. Chrissy

Of course you can use 3 Tbsp of butter or canola oil. I would go with adding more room temp butter. You will be sacrificing the main coconut flavor component, but the shredded coconut will still add some flavor, it will just be subtle. If you happen to have coconut extract lying around (it’s a longs shot), then go ahead an add 1 tsp along with the substituted butter.

When you get a chance to stock up on glorious coconut oil, you will just have to make them again and taste the difference! Enjoy!

  41. Are either of you two single?? Keep up the good work…

  42. Lauren

Haha yes actually, one of us is…and it’s not me!

  43. Call me…maybe?

  44. So excited to learn about other bloggers in the neighborhood. I just recently started my blog here in Solana Beach. If you are ever up my way, let me know. I would love to get to know other bloggers!

  45. I found your blog through Lindsay of The Lean Green Bean and I love what you’re about! (and the fact that you both live in San Diego, jealous! :) Just looked through your list of recipes and my mouth is watering! It’s always great to find a new food blog! Can’t wait to try your recipes!!!

  46. Hi! I found your blog thru the SD Food Bloggers FB page, and I just wanted to introduce myself :) I’m also a food blogger, although I’m still pretty new to the San Diego area (I’ve only lived here for about half a year). I can’t wait to read more of your posts! They look delicious :)
